Restaurant Supernova: Arrivals, Departures, Mirages, and Food Trucks

by Ryan @ MRPR on August 17, 2010

I took a brief trip to Key West and while I was away the entire Miami dining scene decided to rearrange itself.  So here’s a rundown of what transpired while I was away:

♦ False alarm!  Turns out Michael Schwartz is not thinking about opening a barbecue restaurant in Midtown, regardless of what The Herald tells you.  That’s not very “genuine” of The Herald.

♦ In other barbecue flame-outs, Eater Miami is reporting that a second location of Q (Jonathan Eismann’s barbecue joint) will not be opening on South Beach, and El Scorpion will not be opening in the Design District in the former Pacific Time location.

♦ From the makers of Mr. Yum: 2B Asian Bistro, just five blocks down the street from Mr. Yum in Little Havana.  And serving the same type of food.  This appears to be based upon the Starbucks model of selecting locations.

♦ The Daily is now The Nightly.

♦ Chef Allen Susser of Chef Allen’s is going to be revamping the menu at Books & Books in Coral Gables.  Meanwhile, I hear that Michelle Bernstein is going to be overhauling the menu at

♦ Talula has been sold and in its place will be a new spot called Eden.  Whatever you do, please don’t order the apple.

♦ Good luck finding Nemo.

♦ Sakaya Kitchen is going mobile with the unveiling of a new food truck at the Fall for the Arts festival on September 12th.

♦ Clay Conley, who joined Azul at the Mandarin Oriental after Michelle Bernstein’s departure, is himself departing.  According to Eater Miami, Conley is headed to West Palm Beach.  The big question now is who will take Conley’s place at Azul.  I vote for Jeffrey Brana.  Lock in your votes in the comments below.  (Another option: Dena Marino).

And that’s the update.
