♦ Congratulations to MC Kitchen, named one of Esquire magazine’s best new restaurants for 2013.  Unfortunately, this honor has been a mixed blessing for Miami restaurants in the past several years.  The most recent recipients are 1500° at Eden Roc (which received the honor in 2011 and recently lost its chef, Paula daSilva), Area 31 (which just pressed the reset button and overhauled their entire restaurant) and Sra. Martinez (now closed) in 2009, and Pacific Time in 2008 (also closed).  On the bright side, Michael’s Genuine received the honor in 2007 and is still going strong.  Apparently, being in the Design District doesn’t hurt your chances…

♦ And we’d be remiss if we didn’t also congratulate former Miami resident Michael Chiarello, who was named as Chef of the Year by Esquire.  Before moving to the west coast, Chiarello was the chef at Toby’s in, of all places, Kendall.  Coincidentally, Dena Marino, chef/owner of MC Kitchen, worked as a sous chef for Chiarello at Tra Vigne in Napa Valley and as executive chef of Chiarello’s Ajax Tavern in Aspen, Colorado.  Small world.

♦ Chef Jeff McInnis, formerly of Yardbird, has flown the coop.  McInnis is set to open Root & Bone in NYC sometime in January.
