SLS Hotel on South Beach to Feature Jose Andres' Bazaar and Katsuya Uechi's Katsuya

by Ryan @ MRPR on August 18, 2010

The Mayans predict that the world will end in 2012.  For my last meals, I plan to check out the two new restaurants set to debut that year at the SLS Hotel (1701 Collins Avenue in South Beach).

First up, as announced by Chef Jose Andres on 60 Minutes a few months back, is The Bazaar.  Nothing much new to report, except the expected opening date of “Spring 2012.”  Of course it would be truly bizarre if it opened on time.

But what is actually new and noteworthy is the announcement that Andres will be joined by the first location of Katsuya Uechi’s Katsuya outside of California.   According to the press release, Chef Uechi is one of only four Master Sushi Chef’s in Los Angeles.  Since I didn’t play Magic: The Gathering, I’m not quite sure what it takes to become a Master Sushi Chef.  But I imagine it is a heft accomplishment.  Anyone know if there are any Master Sushi Chefs in Miami?

Miami has been visited by Master Sushi Chefs before:

Though this is no reflection on Chef Katsuya, it is apparently no particular guarantee of anything.
In addition, the chef at Moshi Moshi apparently styles himself as a “Master Sushi Chef” though it is unclear if he’s talking about the same thing:

And as for Moshi Moshi, the less said about it, probably the better.
