Your Cupcakes Frighten and Confuse Me

by Ryan @ MRPR on November 16, 2009

The first thing one might notice when visiting Two Girls and a Cupcake is the decor.  Let’s call it “LSD-chic.”

Actually, I take that back.  The first thing one notices is the name.  Google it.

[Waiting, waiting.]

Okay, moving right along…

The “two girls” at this downtown cupcakery prove that every day is celebration-worthy, even when the occasion is just “Kim Kardashian’s birthday,” which was recently memorialized at TG&C.  Then again, everything about this place is a trip.  The DEA should set up 24-hour surveillance (if they haven’t already).

Oh, and the cupcakes.  How could I forget?  The flavors are reminiscent of Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Oregon (creators of such memorable doughnuts as the Nyquil-glazed variety), with strange yet tasty varieties of frosting, fruit filling (sometimes), and delicious cake.  These cupcakes do not try to be something they’re not.  For instance, they are not the super-moist variety of cupcake made famous (in Miami at least) at Misha’s.  Instead, they’re kind of reminiscent of cornbread, and I mean that as a compliment.

Then again, if comparing the cake to cornbread makes you queasy, then perhaps you ought not to Google the name of this place.

Two Girls and a Cupcake is located online and, in the three-dimensional world that the rest of us inhabit at 140 SE 1st Ave. in Downtown Miami.

Speaking of confections, this past weekend I had the chance to sample the results of this art/food happening: Interesting and delicious, including best pear tart I have ever had.

I was saddened to find out today that they closed the store!

That’s a real shame to hear. It was great to have downtown, even if short-lived. Hopefully another fake perfume store/fake electronics store/fake luggage store will open up in its place.
