May 2014 Power Rankings

by Ryan @ MRPR on May 12, 2014

Note: This blog began on November 10, 2009.  In terms of the initial readership, it was somewhere between a tree falling in the forest and the sound of one hand clapping.  In other words, it didn’t make much noise.  While I admit that rankings (in general, and these in particular) are not perfect, the blog was an easy way to share my own personal list with friends.  The number of people clicking on this piece of internet real estate has grown over time and it’s flattering that people enjoy reading what is written on these pages.  But as was written on the blog a couple of weeks ago, it is time for a bit of a change.

On April 28, 2014, it was announced (by Lesley Abravanel at Miami.com) that my good friend, Danny Serfer (chef/owner of Blue Collar), and I are opening a restaurant called Mignonette.  We are very excited to get open and share what we’re creating with fans of Blue Collar, readers of this blog, and new faces as well.  It’s going to be a challenge and a whole lot of fun.

But it’s also a fair question as to what to do with the blog.  Some will argue that it is a conflict of interest to continue the blog and own a restaurant, or that it gives “an appearance of impropriety.”  They may be right.  As I’ve said many times on here, this is one person’s opinion and it should be taken, like dishes at many of the restaurants not on this list, with a grain of salt.  Just as before, there’s some level of trust required that I’m not shilling for a friend or seeking retribution on an enemy.  So I decided that one gesture of goodwill is to remove Blue Collar from the rankings, since Danny and I will be embarking on this new enterprise together.  But hey, to be clear, I fucking love Blue Collar.  It’s where you’ll find me most often and it is the reason that I decided to get into the game and open Mignonette with Danny.  Of course, I also won’t rank Mignonette on here.

Last but not least, I also wanted to keep the rankings going because, for every Michael’s Genuine that I am enthusiastic about but doesn’t need my help to stay packed night in and night out, there’s a Las Tapas De Rosa that I feel doesn’t get the appreciation it deserves.  If they get even a little more business because of this blog, I’m going to try my hardest to keep doing it in a way that is honest.

With regards to the ‘Quick Hits’ and other occasional posts with chef and restaurant news, I’ll probably be quieter on that front and stick to the basics with just the rankings for the timebeing.  I’ll still share news about other restaurants on my Twitter account, which is a snarkier version of the blog.

Okay, enough talk.  Here are the May 2014 power rankings:
